The best DI system I have seen is Toyota D4S where they still use port injectors along with direct injectors. I honestly think that most manufacturers are going to be forced to go with a D4S style injection system as the EU starts putting in emission regulations for particulate emissions from GDI engines. It's pretty bad how much more particulate emissions are generated from DI engines versus port injected engines. If they don't do a combination, they may have to add particulate filters, similar to diesels.
